Chapter 7

When Jamie Left

T he last time I saw Jamie Rose, it was an early Saturday morning. She held her Raggedy Ann doll. I went over and kissed her good-bye. She cupped my face in her hands and said, “I love you, Mommy.” I said, “I love you back.” That was the last time I saw Jamie Rose alive.

On September 11, 1988, Grandparent’s Day, I left for my job down the road from where we lived. I wasn’t planning to come home right after work. I went to a friend’s house after my shift was completed to help with her daughter’s sixteenth birthday party.

I got home at about midnight. It was my usual nightly routine to go into my daughters’ room and kiss them good night. I walked in and went to kiss Jamie on her forehead and found that it was ice cold. I screamed for my husband. Waves of shock and disbelief ran through my body. Joe grabbed Jamie’s body and brought her into the living room, and he hovered over her while screaming. I am sorry to say that this is reality.

I ran to the phone and called 911. I then called our neighbor, and she came over and tried to resuscitate her. My other daughter, Mandy, woke up. Jamie and Mandy were three and four years old at this time. I grabbed her, ran outside, and waited for the ambulance to arrive. Mandy started screaming that Jamie was only sleeping. When the ambulance arrived, I screamed to them that they were too late. Jamie had died before I got home. My husband got into the ambulance with Jamie and the medical team. My neighbor took Mandy back to her house. I guess I, then got into my car and drove to the hospital with my guardian angel with me and screaming to myself: Jamie is dead.”
